Care, Maintenance and Cleaning of Stainless Steel

The best way to effectively clean stainless steel is to use soap or a mild detergent, such as Sunlight Liquid, in warm water and apply with a soft cloth or synthetic sponge. Rinse in water and dry with a soft cloth or allow to drip dry.

For more intensive cleaning, a mild household cleaner (Handy Andy) and fine synthetic scouers (Scotch – Brite) or a brush with a nylon bristles may be used. However, routine cleaning applied over several days will generally remove heavy soiling or staining.

Adhesive Labels

Soak the item in a hot soapy solution and rub with a soft cloth or sponge. If the ashesive remains, rub the area using a soft cloth soaked in alcohol ( Methylated Spirits) or an organic solvent(Benzene). Follow the routine cleaning.

Finger Prints

Pre-treat marks with alcohol or organic solvent.
Follow with a routine cleaning.

Tea and Coffee Stains

Use a synthetic scourer and thin paste off washing soda (Sodium Carbonate) fine household cleaners ( Handy Andy, VIM, Ajax) made with hot water. Follow with routine cleaning.

Grease, Fats and Oils

Wipe off the excess with a soft cloth and pre- soak in warm detergent. Follow with a routine cleaning.

Water marks\lime scale

Soak for prolonged period in a 25% vinegar solution to loosen the deposit. Continue cleaning as for food stains.

Chemical, Battery acid, Tile cleaners or Undiluted Bleach

Acids such as Hydrochloric(Swimming pool acid or tile cleaning) or Sulphuric(Battery acid) should be rinsed off the stainless steel immediately with large volumes of water. If staining \ damages occurs, contact Stair-Art.

Use

•    Routine gentle cleaning
•    Household cleaners showing ‘suitable for stainless steel’
•    Repeated routine gentle cleaning rather than a single aggressive cleaning.

Do not use

•    Course abrasive powders.
•    Metallic scourers.
•    Silver or brass cleaners.
